This article resulted in my receiving a number of 'secular' bookings such as for a Teddy Bear's picnic, a 'Food and wine' festival and a Library reading group. The full article is reproduced below. However, the main focus of my ministry remains the advancement of God's Kingdom through "Teaching Bible truths to children in a fun filled way."

Please contact me if you think I can assist your Church or Christian organisation in any way. Maurice Sweetsur Tel. 09 2961495.

From Scientist to Children's Entertainer.

Dr Maurice Sweetsur spent almost 30 years working as a Research Chemist at a Scottish Dairy Research Institute. Today, he travels throughout the Auckland region entertaining children with his fast moving shows.

In 1993 Dr Sweetsur took early retirement from his work as a Scientist, emigrated to Auckland, and began gradually entertaining groups of children to fill in his spare time. Under the name "Uncle Maurice" Dr Sweetsur has, in the last seventeen years, developed many 'fun' Children's programmes, using a variety of techniques such as Ventriloquism, 'Magic' tricks, balloon modelling, puppetry and stories.

Although Uncle Maurice does entertain at a few birthday parties, he is more often found at such places as School Assemblies, Kids clubs, Sunday schools, Holiday programmes, Children's camps and Uniformed groups such as Boys Brigades and Girls Brigades.

Uncle Maurice presently resides in Papakura, and teaches regular, weekly, Religious education classes at ten primary schools. These classes are designed to teach children values and help them make good life choices. Maurice has also taken special "Assembly" type programmes at over a hundred other schools throughout the Auckland region.

Dr Sweetsur says that although he enjoyed his career as a Research chemist, it gives him far more satisfaction to be able to make a child laugh or smile at one of his jokes or tricks. As he doesn't charge for his presentations, to make a child happy, he says, is his reward.

When asked which of his numerous magic tricks get the greatest response, Maurice says "The most baffling one is when I draw a face on a white board and then walk away from it. Suddenly the face "comes alive" and begins to talk! "Pinocchio's nose" also causes amazement. A tiny 5 inch stick is suddenly transformed into a long 5 foot pole if one of the children should tell a 'little lie'. We have a lot of fun with that trick, but probably the most popular illusion is when a jar of sugar is instantly transformed into lollies. However the popularity of this one may have something to do with the fact that the lollies are distributed to the children afterwards!"

Maurice says that he has many wonderful memories of entertaining children over the last seventeen years, and he is planning to continue for some time yet, but that things do not always go exactly according to plan. He recalls that once a book he was showing the children at one South Auckland school suddenly burst into flames (which was expected), but then the heat from the flames set off a smoke alarm (which was not expected). This resulted in the school being evacuated and the Fire Brigade called out. However Maurice says he was forgiven for this and has in fact been invited back to that school a number of times since.

"Uncle Maurice" says that he is prepared to do a free show for any group in the Auckland area, large or small, and can be contacted at 09 2961495 or by email at mnmsweetsur@xtra.co.nz

More information about his programmes may be found on his web site at http://www.unclemaurice.blogspot.com/

NOTE. I hold a PhD degree in Food Science from Strathclyde University (Glasgow), and am the author or co-author of over 60 scientific papers.

For most of my life I was an atheist, but then in 1980 I had a dramatic personal encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ and was gloriously saved. I have been endeavouring to follow Him since. I fellowshipped at an A.O.G. church in Prestwick, Ayrshire, where my Christian interests included leading a children's group (Crusaders), personal evangelism, and writing articles on Evangelism, The authority of the Bible and Creation for three national Christian outreach newspapers ("Challenge", "New Life", and "The Challenger").

In 1993 I took early retirement from my job in Ayr and emigrated with my wife Margo and son Paul to New Zealand. I now fellowship at Harvest Christian church in Papakura, Auckland. On arriving in New Zealand I was amazed and thrilled to discover that "lay" Christians are allowed to teach Bible lessons (usually 30 minutes per week) in many State Primary schools. I now spend most of my weekdays preparing for and taking these classes, averaging about 12 per week in schools throughout the South Auckland area.

In 1998 I began to develop "fun-filled" special lessons for children using ventriloquism, Gospel illusions, puppets, balloon modelling and 'fun' stories. Under the name "Uncle Maurice", I now take these lessons to various groups throughout Auckland and beyond, e.g. Sunday schools, Family services, Kids clubs, Holiday programmes, School 'break-up' Assemblies, Uniform organisations, Church camps etc.

As I have a private pension from Britain, I am able to offer these lessons free of charge to groups in the Auckland area.
